Besides reaching the English Catholic reading audience, perhaps the largest in the world, Otterbein’s article had a further impact. In the late 1960s the Encyclopaedia Britannica, because of the recent favorable coverage of the shroud, gave a few lines on the existence of the relic—something it had never done before—in one of its periodic updates. When the reference work was totally revised and published in 1974, it contained for the first time an article on the shroud, albeit only 120 words: “Shroud of Turin,” read the entry, which was flanked by a photograph of the face, linen cloth purporting to be the burial cloth of Christ. . . . In 1898, the first photographic plates were made of it.... After studying this evidence two professors of biology presented to the Academie des Sciences in 1902 their conclusions.... The history of the shroud, however, cannot be traced beyond the mid- 14th century.
